After obtaining his degree he accepted an honours placement to study the Australian Alps. This was an auspicious career choice, as in the mid 1940s very little was known about the ecology of the area. In the early 1950s his research took him interstate and overseas until 1955, when he began a 19 year career at CSIRO Division of Plant Industry.
