After studying under Mark Oliphant at Birmingham University, Ernest Titterton made important contributions to the war effort in the development of radar and the atomic bomb. One of only two British scientists to be retained by the US atomic project at war's end, he later worked at the UK Atomic Energy Research Establishment before joining Oliphant at the recently established ANU. Titterton remained an outspoken advocate of the use of nuclear energy throughout his career (Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre website)
